RICHMOND, Va. --- Tennessee Tech's slugging first baseman Zach Stephens was named honorable mention All-America by Collegebaseballinsider.com after capping off a stellar sophomore season with an appearance in the 2012 College Home Run Derby in Omaha. A year ago, he was named Freshman All-America.
Stephens is one of six Ohio Valley Conference players to be named to the CBI All-America team, joining third baseman Trenton Moses (Southeast Missouri; 2nd Team), second baseman Jordan Hankins A(ustin Peay; HM), shortstop Richie Rodriguez (Eastern Kentucky; HM), designated hitter/third baseman Greg Bachman (Austin Peay; HM) and RHP Dustin Quattrocchi (SIUE ; HM)
Throughout the season, he has consistently ranked near the top of the NCAA in those categories. He finished the yeas ranked sixth in the nation in home runs (18), fifth in slugging percentage (.696) and fourth in home runs per game (.34).
Additionally, his .368 batting average ranked 58th in the nation, while his 142 total bases ranked 29th. His on base percentage of .479 put him in 32nd place nationally.
Named to the ABCA/Rawlings South Region team at the close of the regular season, Stephens was also selected as one of seven players from college baseball to participate in the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, held on July 3.
