Purple and Gold Scrimmage preps Golden Eagle squad for first tournament

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech volleyball team put on their jerseys for the first time in the 2013 season, donning them during the Purple and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles had the opportunity to get some jitters out as they played in front of Tech fans at the Eblen Center. Every athlete had the opportunity to shake some of the "gameday rust" off in preparation for the upcoming season.

"The energy was pretty low to start," said head coach Dave Zelenock. "Everyone was testing the waters, which is why it is very important to have a scrimmage. The girls got to wear their jerseys for the first time this season. By set four, it started to resemble our goals for the season, which is high energy and high offense."

For the freshmen, this was their first official time representing Tech athletics. Coach Zelenock complimented freshmen Kennedy Wade on her play during the scrimmage.

"Kennedy Wade did a phenomenal job defensively and on serve receive," said Zelenock. "We put her in the libero role on the second side. She cleaned up a lot of digs and made a lot of of great athletic plays, which we expected of her, and we finally got to see her play without thinking about the position."

The Golden Eagles open the 2013 season at the Winthrop Invitational against the host Eagles on Friday at 6 p.m.
