Lady Toppers climb past Golden Eagles

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A balanced offensive attack was not enough to overcome Western Kentucky, as Tech (2-9) took the loss in its final match of the Western Kentucky Invitational. The Golden Eagles lost by the scores of 25-13, 21-25. 26-24 and 25-13.

The Lady Toppers controlled the first set as they won 25-13, but the Golden Eagles fought back hard in the second set for a 25-21 victory to even the match at one. Senior middle blocker Marie Peddicord added four kills while senior outside hitter Leah Meffert and sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Gray each chipped in three kills.

"The team looked like a different team for most of the match," assistant coach Jessica Lane said. "It was a good match to play right before the conference schedule and it showed us what kind of effort we need to give to win."

The third set was decided in extra points as neither team could take full control. The Golden Eagle tied it up 24-24 after a kill by Meffert, but the Lady Toppers were able to hold Tech back as they took the final two points and the set 26-24. Western Kentucky was able to wrap up the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

Gray led the team in kills with 10, while Meffert and Peddicord each tallied nine. Senior setter Melanie Culp added 39 assists en route to being named to the Western Kentucky Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The Golden Eagles begin their OVC schedule on the road Friday, as they take on Eastern Kentucky, at 6 p.m.
