COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech volleyball team (4-12, 2-3 OVC) won its second OVC match as it down the UT Martin Skyhawks by the scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21.
"We played with a little more attitude today,"
head coach John Blair said. ""We played well towards
the end of each set which was crucial and something we have been
preaching."
The Golden Eagles were downed in the first set by the score of
25-21, but they fought back hard in the second set as neither team
led by more than five points the whole way. With the score tied at
23, senior middle blocker Marie Peddicord recorded one kill and UT
Martin committed an attack error to give Tech the 25-23 win heading
into the break.
Tech dominated the third set early on as it built a 15-8 lead.
The Skyhawks managed to get within two of the Golden Eagles at
18-16, but that was close as they would get as TTU outscored UT
Martin 7-3 to take the set 25-19.
The fourth set remained close early as both teams were knotted
up at 13 a piece. The Golden Eagles then went for the knockout as
they tallied six unanswered points to take the lead 19-13. Tech
would go on to finish the set 25-21 to secure its second OVC
victory.
Senior outside hitter Leah Meffert led Tech in kills with 17,
while freshman outside hitter Natalie Penrod posted 15 kills.
Peddicord also reach double figures in kills with 12. Senior setter
Melanie Culp added a season-high 48 assists, while freshmen
defensive specialist Allison May recorded 27 digs.
"Allison played a solid match," Blair said.
"She provided a steady influence on the court all
match."
Tech continues its four-match road trip Saturday, as it takes
on the Murray State Racers, at 2 p.m.
