Three school records, 12 personal-bests fall at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Freshman Katie Lowery, junior Leayn Carter and senior Meagan Lyons each set school records and 12 personal-best marks were established by the Tennessee Tech women’s track and field team Saturday at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational.

The Golden Eagles earned six first-place finishes, including two for Lyons in the 55m hurdles and the high jump. Senior Katherine Lynn tied Lyons for first in the high jump. Senior Ashley Evans topped the field in the 3000 meter run, and freshman Lacy Yslas had the best effort in the weight throw. Tech’s other winning performance came from the 4x400 relay team of Carter, sophomore Emily Weinzetl, junior Danielle Catlett and senior Allison Price

No team scores were kept in the meet.

In the pole vault, Lowery broke the 9-feet, ¼ inch-record set just two weeks ago by senior Rachel Forbes. Lowery cleared the bar at 9-feet, six and ¼ inches, and also came in second in the competition.

Carter brought down the 17-feet, 1 ¼ inch long jump standard set by Lauren Addie at the OVC Championships during the 2007 season. Carter’s distance of 17-feet, 4 ¾ inches was enough to earn second place.

Lyons surpassed her school record in the 55 meter hurdles of 8.42 set two weeks ago. Her new time of 8.39 was enough to earn her first place.

Evans posted a first-place time in the 3000 meter run of 10:50.98, also a personal career-best mark.

In the high jump, Lyons topped the bar at 5-feet, 1 ¾ inches, a result which earned her the top mark in the competition.

Lynn also achieved a mark of 5-feet, 1 ¾ inches in the high jump, her best height of the season.

Yslas won the weight throw event with a career-best distance of 37-feet, 3 ¾ inches.
Tech competitors also achieved second-place marks at Sewanee.

Price ran a time of 27.01 in the 200 meter dash, just .03 away from earning first-place.
Freshman Madison Borden placed second in the shot put with her career-best distance of 34-feet, nine inches.

Price achieved a career-best in the 55 meter dash, by placing third with a time of 7.37. Junior Ifeyinwa Eguzo clocked in her own personal career-best time of 7.57 in the competition and placed fourth.

In the mile run, Senior Tiffany Palmer’s time of 5:29.64 now is her career standard and earned her a fourth-place finish in the event. Two other Tech runners established career-bests in the competition. Evans placed seventh with a time of 5:38.72. Sophomore Traci Jones clocked in a time of 5:42.46 and finished eighth.

Palmer set a personal-best in the 3000 meter run in which she established a time of 10:58.16, placing her fifth.

Freshman Justine Phillips achieved a career standard mark in the 200 meter dash with an eighth-place showing.
