COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Katie Lowery
(right) set a school record in the pole vault and returnees set 10
new personal best marks as the Tennessee Tech women's track &
field team claimed first place in the TTU Invitational Saturday in
Tucker Stadium.
The Tech men, meanwhile, claimed third place while competing in
just the distance events.
In women's competition, Tech women claimed first place finishes in
11 of the 18 events, including all but one of the eight field
events. Tech piled up 329 points in the women's meet, with Kentucky
State (119) finishing second, Alabama A&M (105) third and
Carson-Newman (19) fourth.
In the men's meet, Kentucky State earned 189 points to win the
team title, followed by Tennessee State (111), Tech (100), Alabama
A&M (75) and Carson-Newman (21).
Lowery, a freshman from Andersonville, Tenn., cleared 9-feet, 6
inches in the newly installed pole vault to break the school record
and win the event.
Junior Ashley Mayhew placed first in two events. She won the shot
put (39' 10 1/4") and beat the field in the hammer throw (132'6").
Senior Katherine Lynn won the high jump (5'4").
Leayn Carter (photo at left) placed first in the
triple jump with a personal best (36' 1/2") and also established a
new career-bst in the long jump (17'1") by placing second.
Senior Rachel Forbes had a personal best in winning the javelin
(119'2"), the second-best throw in school history. Her sister,
junior Rebecca Forbes also had a career toss (95'7") in the javelin
to finish second.
Freshman Lacy Yslas won the discus (130'2 1/2") wih the third-best
throw in school history.
The Tech tandem of Emily Weinzetl (1:00.89) and Danielle Catlett
(1:01.11) took the top two spots in the 400-meter dash, each
posting a career-best time. Tech also got personal best times in
the 1,500-meter run by Amanda Simmons (5:16) and Ashley Evans
(5:19) in finishing fifth and sixth.
Seniors Stephanie Place, Tiffany Palmer and Ashley Evans gave Tech
a 1-2-3 sweep in both the 1,500- and the 5,000-meter run.
Tech's other first-place finish came in the 4x400 relay in
4:12.74. The 4x100 relay foursome took second place (49.79) with
the fourth-best time in school history.
Meagan Lyons took second place in both the 100- and 200-meter
dashes, and also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles. Traci
Jones was second in the 800-meter run.
In mens comepition, Peter Woerner led Tech with two
first-place finishes, Sam Taylor placed first, second and third,
and Jarrad Read took third-place in a couple of races.
Woerner won the 1,500-meter run in 4:14 and was the top finishes
in the 5,000-meter run in 16:3.23. Taylor won the 800-meter run in
2:00.29, was second at 1,500 meters in 4:18.00, and placed third in
the 5,000-meter run in 16:24.22. Read's third place efforts came in
the 800 and 1,500.
The Golden Eagles will be in Clarksville next week to compete in
the Austin Peay Invitational on Saturday, April 3.
