JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Junior Ashley Mayhew set a school record
in the hammer throw, senior Katherine Lynn tied the school mark in
the high jump, and 16 different individuals earned points as the
Tennessee Tech women’s track & field team claimed fourth
place among 18 schools Saturday at the Gem of the Hills
Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville State.
Coach Tony Cox saw his athletes earn 84 total points, finishing
the competition behind only Kennesaw State (172), Georgia State
(136.5) and Jacksonville State (131). Columbus State was a distant
fifth with 38 points.
Meagan Lyons was the top individual point-getter for the Golden
Eagles with 17, placing first in the 100-meter hurdles for 10
points, fifth in the high jump for three, and helping the 4x100
relay team place fifth for four points.
Mayhew added 14 to Tech’s total, earning a first-place
finish in the shot put and finishing fifth in the hammer with a
school-record toss of 140 feet, 7 inches.
Ashley Evans went the distance for the Golden Eagles – twice
– and earned 11 points in the two longest races of the day.
The senior from Jackson, Tenn., placed second in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase in the time of 11:50.50, the second-best time in the
event in school history.
Evans placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run, one of three Golden Eagles to earn points in the event. Stephanie Place won, her second win in the 5K in two weeks, while Tiffany Palmer placed third as the TTU threesome piled up 17 team points in the race.
Lynn, a senior from Cookeville, matched the winner on her second try at 5 feet, 7 inches to claim second place in the high jump and tie Amy Campbell’s school record. Lyons finished fifth with a personal-best of 5 feet, 3 inches.
Senior Rachel Forbes tacked on six points with a couple of scoring performances. She was fourth in the javelin for five points and earned an additional point by placing eighth in the pole vault.
A pair of freshmen earned points for the Golden Eagles in the
discus. Madison Borden placed third to earn six points while Lacy
Yslas finished sixth and claimed three points.
Emily Weinzetl, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, helped earned
eight points by running a leg on both fifth place relay teams,
while junior Danielle Catlett helped the 4x400 relay team and also
placed eighth in the 400-meter run to account for five points.
The Golden Eagles will run next Saturday in the TSU Invitational in Nashville.
