NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team's run at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals officially ended Sunday, as Elias Grubert fell in his singles match in the consolation quarterfinals.

The sophomore squared off with Indiana's Carson Haskins, dropping a grueling first set, 7-6 (1). The Paraná, Argentina native couldn't quite muster the comeback bid in set two, eventually falling 6-4 to end his showing in Nashville. Grubert ended his tournament with three victories in the consolation bracket.

The Golden Eagles will round out their fall slate of action at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. beginning Friday, Nov. 8. The event will run through Sunday, Nov. 10 and will be hosted by the Demon Decons at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.


Saturday 10/26 RECAP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Elias Grubert highlighted the Tennessee Tech tennis team's day three performance in the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, as the 5-foot-8 sophomore secured a pair of wins in Saturday's singles consolation bracket to advance to Sunday's quarterfinal.

Following a first-round 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Dayton's Will Harper on Friday, Grubert soared to back-to-back victories to move into the final eight in a field that started with 60. The Parana, Argentina native began his strong showing with a 0-6, 6-1, 10-4 nod over Purdue's Sebastian Welch to advance to the bracket's third round, before Grubert tallied a straight-set, 6-3, 7-6 (3) win against Union's Srdan Pejic to move to the quarterfinals.

Grubert will square off with Indiana's Carson Haskins in Sunday's quarters, with first serve in Nashville slated for 9 a.m. CT. The semifinals is scheduled to occur after the conclusion of the quarters.

Fellow TTU sophomore Rafael Tosetto's impressive run in the singles main draw came to a close Saturday afternoon, as the Jacarei, Brazil product ultimately bowed out in the in third round. After winning in each of the first two days in a field that featured 100, Tosetto lost a hard-fought three-set battle to James Story out of Memphis that saw Tosetto take the early edge in the clash. The 5-foot-8 sophomore secured a 7-6 (4) win in the opener, but dropped the next two with a narrow 7-6 (6) loss in set two and a 6-1 defeat in set three.


FRIDAY 10/25 RECAP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Day two of the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals saw one member of the Tennessee Tech tennis team keep his singles draw championship hopes alive in Nashville Friday, while three more Golden Eagles were also in action.

It was sophomore Rafael Tosetto claiming victory for the purple and gold, advancing to the third round of a competition featuring well over 100 participants. The Tech youngster bested Sean Bailey of IUPUI, taking down the Jaguar in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The win creates a third-round match-up between Tosetto and Memphis' James Story at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. The winner of that match will advance to the fourth round, also scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon.

Also in competition for the Golden Eagles on Friday was sophomore Carlos Vicente, who dropped a heartbreaker in round two to Vanderbilt's George Harwell. The Commodore edged out Vicente in three, hard-fought sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Riku Kubota also saw his tournament come to the end at the hands of a Southeastern Conference opponent, falling to Kentucky's Kento Yamada, 6-0, 6-2.

Competing in the consolation bracket of more than 60 players was Elias Grubert. The sophomore snagged the second Tech victory of the day after setting down Will Harper of Dayton in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Grubert will square off in the second round of the consolation bracket with Purdue's Sebastian Welch at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning.


THURSDAY 10/24 RECAP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A strong showing of singles play carried the Tennessee Tech tennis team in the first day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Nashville, as the Golden Eagles took home straight-set wins in three-of-four first-round matchups.

Carlos Vicente secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Dayton's Steven Karl, while Riku Kubota registered a 6-2, 6-4 nod over Butler's Alvaro Huete and Rafael Tosetto claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over former Golden Eagle, Gonzalo Garica-Neito, now a member of Lipscomb.

Tech's only defeat during singles play was an Elias Grubert 6-4, 6-1 loss to Lipscomb's Victor Chaw.

The Golden Eagle success did not carry over to doubles action with defeats in all three first-round battles. Louisville's David Mizrahi and Randy Wilson took down the TTU tandem of Fanis Kontopoulos and Marc Mila, 8-4, while a similar fate hit Riku Kubota and Lucca Silva with an identical 8-4 loss to Butler's Michael Dickson and Ryan Roegner.

A nail-biter was the theme in Tech's final first-round doubles bout, but when the dust finally settled, Elias Grubert and Carlos Vicente fell 8-7 (4) to IUPUI's Alex Jochim and Colton Morehart.  

Second round singles action, as well as the first round of singles consolation play continues Friday morning in Nashville.
