COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in three weeks, a member of the Tennessee Tech tennis team was recognized for their excellence on the courts with a piece of Ohio Valley Conference hardware.
Carlos Vicente was named the OVC Male Tennis Athlete of the Week Wednesday afternoon after helping pace Tech to a victory in last week's lone match, a 7-0 win over previously unbeaten Lipscomb on Mar. 7. Vicente's honor makes it the second time this season a Golden Eagle has hoisted the accolade, with freshman Evzen Holis recently securing the award on Feb. 26.
Vicente was key in TTU's win over the Bisons, registering a victory in both singles and doubles action to help push the Golden Eagles (5-4) to their fourth straight nod. Playing in the No. 2 singles position for just the third time this spring, the 5-foot-8 sophomore picked up his first win in that spot with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Pablo Caffarena.
Vicente showed off his doubles prowess as well in the contest, teaming up with Fanis Kontopoulos for a 6-1 victory against Caffarena and Victor Chaw in the No. 1 slot. Through nine affairs, Vicente holds a 6-3 singles record and a 4-5 doubles mark.
Vicente and the rest of the Golden Eagles will put their four match winning streak on the line on Friday, Mar. 13, as TTU welcomes Winthrop to town to conclude a season-long, four-match homestand. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. CT and admission to Tech Tennis Courts is free of charge.
