Golden Eagles dominant in 7-0 win at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team was dominant in its third win of the Ohio Valley Conference regular season Saturday, rolling to a 7-0 victory over previously unbeaten Jacksonville State to clinch a current share of first place in the league.

Tech (7-13, 3-1) won its third straight OVC match to tie with both the Gamecocks (10-6, 3-1) and Belmont (11-9, 3-1) for first place in the league, kicking off the night by taking the doubles point.

The team of Gonzalo Garcia and Carlos Vicente took out the JSU duo of Aljaz Kaplja and Sergio Lizarraga, 6-3. In No. 2 doubles action, Jordi Blanchar and Guillermo Agost of the Gamecocks defeated Wenceslao Albin and Riku Kubota, 6-3 to tie things up. Tech then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory from Lucca Silva and Rafael Tosetto over Joaquin Vallejo and Alexand Vishnevskiy.

The Golden Eagles kicked things into high gear in singles action, with Tosetto snagging a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kaplja. Vicente covered the No. 2 singles slot with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Vallejo.

At No. 3 singles, Elias Grubert soared to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Agost. In the meeting of No. 4 singles action, Kubota dominated, not dropping a point in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Vishnevskiy.

Albin used scores of 6-3 and 6-3 to turn down Lizarraga in the No. 5 singles slot. Fanis Kontopoulos rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set against Blanchar, dropping him in No. 6 singles play with wins of 6-1 and 6-0.

The Golden Eagles will close out their regular season schedule Friday, Apr. 19, playing host to Tennessee State at 1:00 p.m. CT at the Tech Tennis Courts.
