BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A perfect weekend proved to be more than enough for Eduardo Mena, as the 62nd-ranked player in the nation took home the adidas® OVC Male Tennis Athlete of the Week.
Mena, who received the accolade Wednesday morning, went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles action, guiding the Golden Eagles to back-to-back wins over Eastern Kentucky and Chattanooga over the weekend.
In singles play, the two-time OVC Player of the Year began the unblemished stretch with a 6-3, 6-3 nod over EKU's No. 1 Ramon Van Flymen on Mar. 31, before Mena mirrored that showing with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Chattanooga's No. 1 Niklas Gerdes on Apr. 1. Mena has won seven-straight singles bouts and is 10-4 this spring.
As far as doubles play is concerned, the 6-foot senior teamed up with freshman Gonzalo Garcia and took down EKU's Nicolas Castaldo and Josh Piunti, 6-1, in the No. 3 matchup. The Tech tandem then secured a 6-3 victory over Chattanooga's Niklas Gerdes and Cooper Long to tie a ribbon on the weekend's doubles action.
Mena and the rest of the Golden Eagles are gearing up for a first-place showdown at Jacksonville State Thursday afternoon, with both clubs sitting atop the OVC standings at 3-0. First serve from Oxford, Ala. is scheduled for noon CT. Tech will then dip out of conference for a Sunday, Apr. 8 meeting against Campbell from Cullowhee, N.C.
