Cookeville City Council honors Golden Eagles, Brown

Brown, Wilson, Watson, Schweitzer on hand to receive congratulations

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Tech football team was honored in a proclamation issued by the Cookeville City Council at its Thursday night meeting.

The proclamation recognized the Golden Eagles’ accomplishments this fall in three parts — defeating Austin Peay 49-7 in its final regular season game on Nov. 19 in front of 9,142 students and fans, winning its first Ohio Valley Conference title since 1975 and earning a berth in the Football Championship Series Subdivision playoffs for the first time in school history.

The proclamation also recognized head coach Watson Brown, who was named OVC Coach of the Year.

On hand at the meeting to receive the council’s congratulations were Brown, Director of Athletics Mark Wilson, senior defensive back Corey Watson and senior offensive lineman Scott Schweitzer.

Brown, a Cookeville native who starred at quarterback at Cookeville High School, led the Golden Eagles to a 7-4 overall record and a share of TTU’s first Ohio Valley Conference title in 36 seasons this fall.

Brown, who just finished his fifth season as head coach at TTU, has been involved in college coaching for nearly 40 years and has previously served as head coach at Vanderbilt, Rice, Cincinnati, UAB and Austin Peay before returning to pilot his hometown program in 2007.
