Tech women finish 16th at MTSU Blue Raider Invitational


MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech women's golf team took a modest step Tuesday, edging up one spot in the final team standings at the 54-hole, Blue Raider Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee State at the Old Fort Golf Course.

The Golden Eagles moved from 17th to 16th place against the largest field they've faced this year, with 18 teams and 94 individual golfers.

Middle Tennessee, playing on its home course, won the team title with an 889 total, 16 shots ahead of Morehead State (905) in second place. UALR (906) placed third, followed by Southern Illinois (908) and Southern Mississippi (911).

The Golden Eagles shot identical scores of 318 Monday in the first two rounds of the tournament, then closed with a 316 on Tuesday for a 952 total. The Golden Eagles were able to finish ahead of Austin Peay (953) and Northern Iowa (961).

Despite slipping to an 82 Tuesday, senior Katherine Bell (shown in photo) was Tech's top finisher with a 237 total. Bell, who shot scores of 78 and 77 Monday, tied for 63rd place. She was followed on the individual leaderboard by junior Amber Shepherd (239), freshman Madalyn Everts (240), freshman Megan Williamson (241) and freshman Katya Hoffman (247).

Tech will finish the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule at the UAB Beach Blast, a 54-hole tournament scheduled for Monday through Wednesday at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Guif Shores, Ala.
