Shepherd named Pitcher of the Week after his performance against YSU

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Junior right-hander Matt Shepherd earned the Ohio Valley Conference’s Pitcher of the Week award after tossing seven innings and surrendering just one hit in game two against Youngstown State on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles topped Youngstown State 13-7 the second half of the doubleheader and Shepherd struck out six, leaving the game after seven innings leading 12-0. YSU would only get one more hit off the TTU bullpen but did score seven runs in the eighth inning (thanks to seven walks) to narrow the final margin.

After walking the leadoff batter of the game, Shepherd retired the next 10 batters before issuing a walk in the fourth inning. After allowing a leadoff single in the fifth, the junior retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced in picking up his first victory of the season.

Shepherd currently has a 2.67 E.R.A. on the year and has struck out 28 batters in 27 innings of work. His record improved to 3-1 after notching the victory on Saturday.

This week’s award is the second Pitcher of the Week honor given to Tech this season, as fellow right-hander Tristan Archer earned the award in week two of the season.

Tech will continue its home stand this week, hosting a mid-week contest against East Tennessee State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and then a three-day, three-game series with Purdue this coming weekend.
