Golden Eagles to compete Saturday at Austin Peay Invitational

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech track & field team will be in Clarksville, Tenn., Saturday to compete in the Austin Peay Govs Invitational. Coach Tony Cox will have a team of 19 athletes in the eight-team field. In addition to the host Austin Peay squad and the Golden Eagles, other teams expected to compete are Alabama A&M, Bellarmine, Bethel, Lane, Trevecca Nazarene and Western Kentucky.

The Golden Eagles finished fifth among 16 teams last weekend at the Western Carolina Invitational, establishing five personal best marks.

Kelli Keck, a junior from Crossville, Tenn., posted a new career-best time of 26.57 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing 18th overall. Sophomore Brookyln Kimball, competing in the event for the first time, was just a shade behind in 27.08 seconds.

Keck also posted a seventh-place finish in the long jump (16 feet, ½ inch), and eighth place in the triple jump (34 feet, 2.75 inches).

In the 800-meter run, junior Dalis Connell slashed 16 seconds from her previous best, running the distance in 2:30.22 for a 24th place finish. Landry Loving (in photo)  posted a time of 2:30.64 in her first stab at the distance outdoors.

Loving was Tech's top finisher in the 1,500-meter run, placing 27th in 5:22.12, also a first-time run for the freshman from Johnson City, Tenn.

In the meet's longest race, Rebecca Cline and Beth Miller each posted personal-best efforts. Cline, a junior from Spring Hill, Tenn., finished fifth with a time of 19:07.32 while Miller, a senior from Watertown, Wis., was eighth at 19:14.66. Junior Yeshi Dohrmann was 10th, running the distance for the first time outdoors, and finishing in 19:53.59.

Peri Winborne, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., had Tech's highest finish at the meet, placing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:24.71.

High jumper Erin Keyes, a junior from Crossville, Tenn., captured one of Tech's two fourth-place finishes. She jumped 4 feet, 11.75 inches.  Senior Katie Lowery was sixth in the pole vault at 9 feet, ¼ inch.

Tech's throwers had one personal best and several Top 10 finishes. Senior Madison Borden led the effort, finishing fourth in the discus (129 feet, 10 inches) and fifth in the shot put (39 feet, 1.25 inches). Sophomore Margarett Holder had the PR with a shot put toss of 33 feet 8.5 inches. Lacy Yslas, a senior from Sparta, Tenn., was sixth in both the discus (122 feet), and the javelin (95 feet, 10 inches).

The longest event at APSU will be the 3,000-meter run, so Tech's best hopes for scoring points will likely come in the field events. Among the team's leading contenders could be Borden in the discus, Lowery in the pole vault and Chelsea Mills, a freshman from Chattanooga who missed last week's action, in the triple jump.

The team will also welcome the addition of a new speedster, as freshman Tiara Hymon will compete individually at 200m, and as a member of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay tandems. Hymon is a product of Ridgeway High School in Memphis.
