Track team opens indoor season Saturday at Southern Illinois

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech track & field coach Tony Cox and his team will get the 2012-13 indoor season underway this weekend when the Golden Eagle sprinters, jumpers and throwers compete at the Southern Illinois Invitational on Saturday.

Tech's distance runners will be absent from this event, just getting back into training for the track season following a two-week break after completing the cross country season.

Among Tech's squad of 12 student-athletes expected to compete, Cox is anxious to see freshman Chelsea Mills in her first action. A sprinter from Chattanooga, Mills will run in the 60- and 200-meter events and also compete in both the long jump and triple jump.

Joining Mills in the running events will be Brittany Cotto, Kelli Keck, Dalis Connell, Brooklyn Kimball and Kendale Caldwell.

The jumpers will include Erin Keyes in the high jump and Katie Lowery (in photo) in the pole vault, while Keck will join Mills in the long and triple jumps.

The throwing events will feature seniors Madison Borden and Lacy Yslas, along with sophomore Margarett Holder.

"This is the first meet of the season and the team is excited to finally get to compete after training all fall," Cox said.

Following the early-December event, the team's next meet isn't until Jan. 18-19 with the East Tennessee Invitational.
