Tech runners close cross country season at NCAA South Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Tennessee Tech cross country teams wrapped up the 2010 season Saturday at the NCAA South Regional in Birmingham, Ala. The Tech men were 18th while the Golden Eagle women placed 25th.

In the men's event, freshman Matthew Bishop led the Golden Eagles by finishing 71st in the time of 33:10.74. Senior Sam Taylor was next to cross the tape, covering the 10K course in 33:50.25 for an 88th place showing. Freshman Tyler Eads (103/35:06.87) and senior Joseh DeLorenzo (104/25:19.21) finished third and fourth for the Golden Eagles, while John Greene (109/36:04.31) and Ben Shassere (112/36:33.11) rounded out Tech's lineup.

Alabama won the men's regional crown with 30 points, placing three of the top five finishers to edge Florida State (55). Florida, Tennessee and Georgia completed the top five teams in the 18-team event.

Freshman Peri Winborne was the first finisher in the women's 6K race for the Golden Eagles, placing 134th in the time of 23:32.40. Freshmen Amelia McCoy (146/23:54.21) ad Rebecca Cline (150/24:01.49) were the next two Tech runners, followed by Leah Bradley (151/24:12.52), Beth Miller (154/24:18.88), Brittney Brown (164/25:19.52) and Emily Williams (167/25:41.21).

Florida State earned the team title with 24 points, with five of the Top 10 finishers in the 25-team race that featured 186 runners. Florida (67) was second, followed in the first five by Vanderbilt, Georgia and Mississippi State.
