Kitts leads Tech in first round at Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Tech sits in 10th place

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Greg Kitts fired a three-under-par 69 in Monday’s first round at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, good enough for a spot in fifth place among 93 golfers at Tennessee Tech’s final tournament of the fall season.

Kitts, a sophomore from Caryville, Tenn., was the lowest Golden Eagle finisher on the first day of play, leading Tech into 10th place out of 17 teams, a field which includes top-25-ranked UAB as well as highly-ranked Vanderbilt.

The Golden Eagles shot a 12-over 296 at the tournament, which was delayed several hours Monday morning due to heavy frost on the course. The Golden Eagles sit one stroke back of Furman in ninth place and four strokes back of Jacksonville and Appalachian State in seventh.

Behind Kitts, Travis Ramsey shot a three-over 75 and was the second-lowest Tech finisher. The rest of the Golden Eagle contingent was made up of Mason Griffin (76), Lee Maxwell (76) and Tyler Cassetty (78).

Gardner-Webb leads the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a two-under 282, five strokes ahead of second-place UAB, which sits three-over-par at 287. Samford is in third at 290, followed by Francis Marion, Wofford and Vanderbilt in a three-way tie for fourth place with scores of 291. Behind Tech, the rest of the field consists of Western Carolina (298), High Point (298), IPFW (298), Radford (298), Elon (298), Guilford (299) and Colgate (311).

Tuesday’s second and final round will tee off at 9 a.m. CDT rather than the originally slated 8 a.m. time due to the threat of frost. Results will be posted at TTUSports.com when they become available.
