Golfer Josh Simer named first-team Academic All-District

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Just a couple of weeks ago, Josh Simer received his degree from Tennessee Tech, graduating with a flawless 4.0 grade average in business. He posted the highest possible GPA while also maintaining the lowest scoring average on the Golden Eagle golf team.

On Thursday, the Golden Eagle golfer from Bolivar, Tenn., was named first-team Academic All-District. A team captain, Simer's name will now appear on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

Simer becomes the sixth Golden Eagle student-athlete this year to receive CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. He joins Taylor Askew (football), Teresa Craig (volleyball), Lee Henry (baseball), Chad Oberacker (baseball) and Lacie Coquerille (softball) on that list.

Simer led the the men’s golf team with a 73.7 average and earned three all-tournament honors during his senior season. He finished in the Top 10 in tournaments five times during 2009-2010. He tied for fourth place at the Murray State Invitational in October for his first all-tourney honor, was third at the Frito-Lay Invitational n February, and fourth at the North Alabama Classic in March. He narrowly missed a fourth all-tourney honor with a tie for sixth at the UTM Grover Page Classic.

A three-time recipient of the Ohio Valley Conference Academic Medal of Honor for achieving the highest GPA in the OVC in men’s golf, Simer lettered four years on the golf team (with a redshirt year in 2007-08) and was named to the 2007 OVC All-Newcomer team.

On May 8, he graduated Summa Cum Laude and received the W. A. Howard Award from TTU, and was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.

In the 2009 Fall semester, he was a member of the President’s Ambassadors, assisting with the Dixie College Celebration. Among his community services activities, Josh helped raise financial support for Lighthouse Boys and Girls’ Ranch, and participated in Feed The Multitudes, delivering Thanksgiving meals to homes in the region through the Stevens Street Baptist Church.

Simer has been named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll four consecutive years and the Tennessee Tech’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester since arriving at Tech.

He is the son of Ronnie and Annette Simer.

Simer's honor gives Tennessee Tech 106 Academic All-District IV winners since 1985. He is the fifth member of the Tech men's golf program to earn academic all-district laurels since 1985. Previous golfers selected include Jim Cornelius (1988), Wade Morrell (1997), Shane Sewell (1999) and Eric Anderson (2005).

The Academic All-America program is organized and voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District IV consists of schools in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Alabama. The Academic All-America program is sponsored by ESPN The Magazine.
