JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Senior Jake Heatherly led the charge as
Tennessee Tech sliced 15 strokes off its score Tuesday, helping the
Golden Eagle men's golf team jump into a tie for seventh place at
the JSU Grub Mart Intercollegiate.
Heatherly fired a second-round 73, the team's lowest score of the
36-hole tournament, as he climbed into a tie with teammate Josh
Simer for 14th place on the indivudual leaderboard.
After opening the day in ninth place, the Golden Eagles leaped
ahead of UT Martin and into a tie with Austin Peay for seventh
place.
Host Jacksonville State took the title, shooting 296 Tuesday after
entering the day in second play at 297, one shot behind St. Johns
University. The Gamecocks posted a 593 for the championship, while
Stetson claimed second place at 602. Armstrong Atlantic (612)
placed third and St. Johns, which went from a first-round 296 to a
320 on Tuesday, finished fourth at 616. SIU Edwardsville rounded
out the top five at 617.
Morehead State (619) took sixth, with Tech and APSU tied for
seventh (629), UT Martin (634) ninth and Lewis University (642)
10th.
Individually, Stetson's Sam Rider snuck into the lead for
medalists honors at 144, one shot ahead of Jacksonville State's
Gonzalo Berlin.
For Tech, Simmer (76-77) and Heatherly (80-73) tied for 14th
place, followed by Wes Korth (83-78--161) in 34th place, Travis
Ramsey (82-8-2--164) in 44th place, and Blake Garrison (89-80--169)
in 53rd place.
Preston Marshall, competing as an individual, finished 52nd after
shooting 87-81--168.
The Golden Eagles will play next in the University of North Alabama
Intercollegiate, March 29-30, iin Florence, Ala.
