BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the first time in his career, Tennessee Tech men's basketball forward Rodney Johnson Jr. was honored as the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Johnson Jr. was a force for the Golden Eagles in their first two games of the 2024-25 season, averaging 19.5 points on 68.0 percent shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.5 steals per game. He also finished an impressive 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
In Tech's season opener at Georgia, a close, 83-78 loss, the senior was efficient in his return to the court from a lower-body injury that kept him out of exhibition play during the preseason. The Bryan, Texas native delivered 12 points on 5-for-8 efficiency, two assists, a steal, and a team-high seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
Returning to the starting lineup for the team's home opener against Bryan College, Johnson Jr. dropped a career-high 27 points in just over 28 minutes of action, connecting on 12-of-17 tries from the field. He finished 3-for-4 from downtown on the night, chipping in three boards, and an assist in Tech's first win of the season.
The Golden Eagles are set to return to action Tuesday evening for a 6:00 p.m. CT tilt against West Georgia in the Eblen Center.
