BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the first time in his Golden Eagle career, Tennessee Tech men's basketball junior guard David Early was honored as the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Early helped lead the purple and gold to a pair of come-from-behind victories last week, pacing the squad in scoring in both affairs in the Eblen Center. For the week, the Logan, W.Va. native averaged 23.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals over 37.3 minutes per game.
In Tech's 81-74 victory over Bethel (Tenn.), Early led the way with a game-high 26 points on 8-for-15 shooting and a 4-for-8 mark from distance. He sunk all six of his free-throw attempts while chipping five rebounds, five assists, and three steals while helping TTU overcome a 13-point, first-half deficit.
He followed it up with a game-high 21 points in Tech's 70-67 triumph over North Alabama, finishing 7-for-11 from the floor while scoring four of the team's final six points as part of an 11-0 run to end the ball game. Early drained a pair of triples and was 5-for-7 from the line while collecting three boards and an assist.
Tech rounds out non-conference action on Wednesday, making a trip north to Indiana to take on Evansville in a 7:00 p.m. CT tilt. The contest will take place at the Ford Center, home not only to the Purple Aces, but also the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
