BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the first time in his young career, Tennessee Tech men's basketball rookie Rylee Samons was honored as the Ohio Valley Conference's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. Samons shared the honor with Tennessee State's Jaylen Jones.
Samons turned in his top two performances of the year in Tech's last two contests of the week, averaging 13.0 points and two rebounds while shooting at an elite level. He finished at 72.7 percent shooting from the field, 77.8 percent from distance, and 100 percent from the free-throw line.
He buried a pair of early triples for six points with three rebounds at North Alabama. The Pikeville, Ky. native followed it up with a perfect day against Alice Lloyd, finishing 6-for-6 from the floor, 5-of-5 from downtown, and 3-of-3 from the line on his way to 20 points. His 5-for-5 mark from downtown tied for the second-most efficient showing from deep in program history with at least five attempts. Only Aleksa Jugovic's 7-for-7 effort from distance at New Mexico on Dec. 21, 2017 stands taller.
Next on the docket for the Tech squad is an in-state match-up at ETSU next Sunday. Tip in Johnson City is set for 3:00 p.m. CT at Freedom Hall Civic Center.
