Team progressing in first spring football scrimmage

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It's the midway point of Tennessee Tech football's 2019 spring practice and as the team hosted its first scrimmage of the spring, there were definitely signs of improvement.

Through the two-hour session on Saturday from Tucker Stadium, it looked like a midsummer scrimmage as if the team was getting set for the new season rather than being months away.

Offensively, the first-team unit put together several big plays and it didn't take them long to get going as Bailey Fisher threw a 75-yard pass to Andrew Goldsmith for a touchdown on the very first play. Goldsmith also scored another touchdown as he broke away from the defenders behind him.

There were also big plays defensively as they were able to put pressure on the quarterbacks. Seth Carlisle and Marcus McMeans picked off passes on almost consecutive plays, the latter returned for a pick-six in the game simulation.

Jackson Guy threw a touchdown pass to Cam Singletary to close out the scrimmage's scoring.

Still, there's plenty left to do as spring practices roll on this week and the next, but this is the final full week. As the week advances, the coaches and staff will make tweaks and minor adjustments as they keep working toward the team's Spring Game on Friday, April 5 on the grass practice field by the Tech Soccer Field and the Hooper Eblen Center.

The team will scrimmage again from Tucker Stadium on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. Practices resume Tuesday morning and are open to the public.
