Golden Eagle women's golf team finishes 11th at EKU Spring Classic

RICHMOND, Ky. -- There were no dramatic comebacks for the Tennessee Tech women's golf team Sunday at the Arlington Golf Club as the Golden Eagles posted an 11th place finish in the 13-team EKU Spring Invitational. Tech opened in seventh place following the first round Saturday, but slipped to 11th in the second round and maintained that spot in the 54-hole event.

Morehead State (901) jumped from third into the lead and captured the team title by two shots over Arkansas State (903). Murray State (904), the leader through the first two rounds, finished another shot back in third place. Rounding out the Top Five were Toledo (910) and Ohio (934).

The second five was led by host Eastern Kentucky (935), followed by Austin Peay (938), Bowling Green State (944), Southern Illinois (948) and a second unit from EKU (957). Tech fiished at 964, ahead of Tennessee State (976) and Marshall (979).

Individually, Morehead State's Emma Jonsson captured medalist honors with 75-72-73--220, winning by a single stroke over a pair of second-place finishers.

For the Golden Eagles, senior Carley Rhyne was the top finisher, placing 27th with rounds of 74-81-80 for a 235 total. Brandy VanEtten (photo above), who was playng as an individual, was next on the leaderboard for coach Brandy Stout's team. The freshman was 33rd, finishing strong with a 74 Sunday after opening with an 82 and an 80, giving her a 236 total.

Senior Lindsay Spradlen (79-80-78--237) was one shot back in 37th place, followed by freshman Katy Beth GLover (79-82-83--244), sophomore Katherine Bell (82-83-83--248), and Amanda Randolph (86-84-88--258). Freshman Amber Shepherd was also in the field competing individually for the Golden Eagles, and finished at 84-86-80--250.

The EKU Spring tourney was the final event in the regular season for the Golden Eagles. The team will now spend the next 10 days preparing for the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, which is scheduled for April 21-23 at Greystone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn.
