Golden Eagles sixth after first round, in pack fighting for second spot

OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. – The fight now might be for second place at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championships, and Tennessee Tech is one of five teams that will come out swinging Tuesday morning.

On Monday, Eastern Kentucky posted a five-over 293 to establish a stronghold on the top position following the first round of the 54-hole event at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Hampton Cove.

Unless fortune smiles on them in the remaining two rounds, five teams will fight for the next position. Murray State (304) is 11 strokes back in second place, followed by Jacksonville State (307), Austin Peay (308), Morehead State (309), and Tennessee Tech (311).

Another six shots back is Belmont (317) in seventh place, followed by SIUE (329), Eastern Illinois (337) and Tennessee State (353).

Freshman Hollee Sadler leads Tech, sitting in a tie for 11th place after shooting an opening-round 76 Monday. Two strokes back are sophomore Allyson Dunn and junior Whitney Robertson in a tie for 14th place at 78 apiece. Senior Maddi Everts fired a 79, and is tied for 20th place while senior Megan Williamson is tied for 36th place after an 83.

Sadler played even-par on all of the par three and par five holes, and had a team-leading three birdies during the round.

Three players in the field of 49 covered the terrain under par, led by Anna Gleixner of Eastern Kentucky with a four-under 68. Murray State's Moa Folke and EKU's Amanda Lindahl are tied for second at one-under 71.

The second round gets underway Tuesday at 8 a.m. Tennessee Tech will be paired up Tuesday with golfers from Austin Peay and Morehead State, beginning at 9:40 a.m.
