CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Freshman Whitney Robertson and junior Maddi Everts led the charge as the Tennessee Tech women's golf team sliced 22 strokes from its first round score on the second day of the Kiawah Island Classic. The tournament is being held at Cougar Point and Oak Point Golf Courses.

With the improvement on Monday, the Golden Eagles vaulted past several schools and moved from 29th place into 24th with a final round of 18 scheduled for Tuesday in the nation's largest college tournament, a 36-team gathering hosted by the College of Charleston.

Because of the size of the tourney field, the event will be broken into two flights on Tuesday with the top 19 teams playing at Cougar Point and the second group of 17 teams playing at Oak Point.

Oak Point has been much kinder to the golfers in the first two rounds. On the opening day, 16 of the top 18 scores were recorded on that layout.

That leaves Tech within 11 strokes of the lead in its group with a 36-hole total of 644, improving to a 311 Monday after a 333 on Sunday. Loyola, sitting in 20th place with a 633, heads the second group and sets the pace for the flight.

In the top group, Kent State's 594 holds a five-shot lead over second place High Point (599). Jacksonville State, the only other OVC team in the field, is in third with a 601.

The Golden Eagles tee off Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET, paired with players from Western Kentucky and William & Mary. Tech is tied with WKU, and two shots back of William & Mary.

Robertson, a freshman from Clarksville, Tenn., who led Tech on the first day with an 80, paced coach Polk Brown's team again on Monday with a low of 73, putting her in a tie for 38th place individually at 153.

Everts, who struggled to an 89 on Sunday, put her game back together Monday with a solid 74. Her two-day total of 163 has her tied with freshman Lydia Triplett in 114th position. Triplett shaved one shot off her opening round, going from an 82 to an 81 for her 163 total.

Sophomore Megan Williamson matched her opening 83 with another round of the same score, and finds herself in 132nd place at 166. Freshman Haley Davidson rounds out the Tech lineup, shooting rounds of 88 and 86 to place her at 174 and tied for 162nd place.

Loyola's 633 leads the second flight by two strokes over Charleston Southern with a 635. Following CSU is Wyoming (639), William & Mary (642), Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech (644), UNC Greensboro (648), Newberry (649), Towson (652), Rutgers (659). Marshall (661), USC Upstate (662), The Citadel (673), Northern Kentucky (676), Bucknell (679), Richmond (687) and Niagara (710).
