SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- The Tennessee Tech men's golf team shot a
298 on the first day of the 54-hole Sea Trail Invitational Friday,
a number that would normally put the Golden Eagles in the chase for
most tourney titles.
But on Friday, eight of the 16 teams came in under par, scorching
the course and leaving the Golden Eagles tied for 15th place.
Stetson finished the first day with a 14-under par team score of
274 to build a five-shot lead over Wofford (279), with James
Madison (280) a close third. Campbell (282) and George Mason (286)
round out the top five.
Three other teams closed the day one-under par, with Appalachian
State, Jacksonville University and Villanova (287) all tied for
sixth place. Tech is one of two Ohio Valley Conference schools in
the field. Murray State (296) is two shots ahead of the Golden
Eagles, who are tied with Longwood (298) for 15th place.
Senior Wes Korth was Tech's first day leader, shooting 72 to place
him in a tie for 27th place. Josh Simer (73) is one shot back and
tied for 34th place, and one more back is Jared Dunn (74), tied for
42nd place. Travis Ramsey (79) and Jake Heatherly (83) are also in
Tech's lineup.
Competing individually, Preston Marshall shot an 81.
Sam Ryder of Stetson shot a 66 to take the individual lead by one
stroke over Marshall Tinsley of George Mason and Brian Colbert of
Villanova (67). A total of 33 golfers scored par or better on
Friday.
