Men's golf adds signees Griffin, Schrock for 2010

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Tech golf coach Craig King has announced the addition to two signees for the Golden Eagle roster beginning in 2010-11 with the inking of Mason Griffin, a senior at Oak Ridge High School, and Sam Schrock, a senior at Roane County High School.

While the pair are attending different high schools, they both hail from Kingston, Tenn., and frequently play golf together, a friendship that will continue for the Golden Eagles.

"I am very excited about adding Mason and Sam to the Golden Eagle golf team next fall," King said. "Their friendship with each other, as well as with current redshirt freshman Greg Kitts, should bring a level of competition internally that will positively boost our team tournament performance. I think they will make an immediate impact next fall and vie for a starting spot."

Mason Grifin is the son of Chris and Suzanne Griffin and plans to major in electrical engineering. His father, Chris, competed for two years on the Golden Eagle golf team in the 1980s. Mason is a senior at Oak Ridge High School where he has been a fixture on the golf team for coach Jody Wadell.

As a junior, Griffin finished second in the district and region tournaments for the Wildcats, and went on to capture second place in the TSSAA state tournament. He has also competed in numerous AAJGT events and was named the 2009 Player of the Year. He has been selected to play in the Wiley Cup the past two years for the Roane/Anderson County team in competition against Knox County.

Sam Schrock is the son of Todd and Jill Schrock and will study chemical engineering. He is a senior at Roane County High School where he has played No. 1 all four years for coach Mike Neal.

He qualified individually for the TSSAA state tournament as a sophomore and junior, finishing 31st in 2007 and 16th as a junior in 2008. As a senior, Schrock helped the Yellowjackets capture the district championship. He has also competed in several AAJGT events and in 2009 qualified for the Tennessee State Junior Amateur where he placed 15th at Champions Run Golf Course in Murfreesboro.

The 2010 Golden Eagles get the spring season underway Feb. 21-22 at Choctaw, Miss., in the Frito Lay - AT&T Intercollegiate hosted by Jackson State University.
