MURRAY, Ky. -- Tennessee Tech senior Josh Simer tore up Miller Memorial Golf Course with a blazing three-under par 68 Monday in the first round of the 54-hole Murray State Invitational. The veteran from Bolivar followed with a 73 on his second tour of the course and finished the first day tied for fourth place.
His efforts helped Tech jump out to a quick start and the Golden
Eagles are tied for fourth place after the first two rounds, with
the final round Tuesday on the 6,601-yard par 71 layout.
Host Murray State, playing on its home course, is in first place in
the team standings with a 281-288--569 total, while the Murray
State #2 squad is second, three strokes back at 284-288--572.
Central Arkansas slipped ahead of Tech in the second round and
holds third place at 289-284--573.
The Golden Eagles shot a 287 to start the tourney and posted a 294
in the second round, putting themselves in a tie with Union
University for fourth place at 581. Belmont (583) is two strokes
back, followed by SIU-Edwardsville (585), UT Martin (591), Southern
Illinois (592), Lipscomb (593), Lewis (595), Morehead State (597),
UT Martin #2 (602) and Bethel (640).
Just behind Simer on the leaderboard is senior Jared Dunn, who carded rounds of 71 and 73 Monday for a 144 total, placing him in a tie for 13th. Also in the Tech lineup, Jake Heatherly (73-74--147) is tied for 31st place, Wesley Korth (75-74--149) is tied for 37th place, and Blake Garrison (79-76--155) is tied for 60th.
Playing in the tournament as an individual entry, Tech's Preston
Marshall (74-71--145) is tied for 18th place.
