Heatherly all-tourney, Golden Eagles sixth at OVC Championships

DICKSON, Tenn. - Jake Heatherly was Tennessee Tech's most consistent golfer and the best in the field on the short holes, helping him tie for fifth place and earn all-tournament honors as the Golden Eagles finished in sixth place at the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference men's golf championships at GreyStone Golf Club.

Heatherly marked 39 pars during the 54-hole tournament, the most of any player in the field, and he had the best total score on the par 3 holes on his way to shooting rounds of 73, 72 and 73 for a 218 total. That place him in a tie for fifth place, three strokes behind the leader.

The medalist was Nick Newcomb of Murray State with a one-under 215 total, helping the Racers run away from the pack for an 18-shot victory. In fact, the top three finishers were from MSU, with Jared White second at 216 and Chris Griffin tied for third at 217.

Also tied for third was Erik Barnes of Austin Peay at 217, while Heatherly and Andres Schonbaum of Jacksonville State tied at 218 to complete the all-tournament lineup.

Murray shot the low round of the three-day tournament on Wednesday with a 284 to finish at one-over 865. Morehead State wrapped up with a 289 on the final day to jump to second place at 19-over with an 883. Jacksonville State (886) was third while Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee State (889) tied for fourth.

Tech's low round of the day Wednesday came from Blake Garrison, who overcame scores of 81 and 80 on the first two days. He closed with a 72, allowing him to vault past six golfes to a tie for 37th place at 233.

After opening with a 71 Monday, Josh Simer posted rounds of 76 and 77 and finished in a tie for 24th place at 224. Preston Marshall tied for 28th place after shooting 76-75-75--226, while Wes Korth finished with a 73 to place 31st at 227.
