DICKSON, Tenn. - Jake Heatherly
was Tennessee Tech's most consistent golfer and the best in the
field on the short holes, helping him tie for fifth place and earn
all-tournament honors as the Golden Eagles finished in sixth place
at the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference men's golf championships at
GreyStone Golf Club.
Heatherly marked 39 pars during the 54-hole tournament, the most
of any player in the field, and he had the best total score on the
par 3 holes on his way to shooting rounds of 73, 72 and 73 for a
218 total. That place him in a tie for fifth place, three strokes
behind the leader.
The medalist was Nick Newcomb of Murray State with a
one-under 215 total, helping the Racers run away from the pack
for an 18-shot victory. In fact, the top three finishers were
from MSU, with Jared White second at 216 and Chris Griffin tied for
third at 217.
Also tied for third was Erik Barnes of Austin Peay at 217, while
Heatherly and Andres Schonbaum of Jacksonville State tied at 218 to
complete the all-tournament lineup.
Murray shot the low round of the three-day tournament on
Wednesday with a 284 to finish at one-over 865. Morehead State
wrapped up with a 289 on the final day to jump to second place at
19-over with an 883. Jacksonville State (886) was third while
Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee State (889) tied for fourth.
The Golden Eagles managed a 293 Wednesday and couldn't keep EKU and
TSU from jumping past in the team standings. The Golden Eagles
finished sixth at 890, followed by Austin Peay (894),
Tennessee-Martin (897) and Eastern Illinois (912).
Tech's low round of the day Wednesday came from Blake Garrison,
who overcame scores of 81 and 80 on the first two days. He closed
with a 72, allowing him to vault past six golfes to a tie for 37th
place at 233.
After opening with a 71 Monday, Josh Simer posted
rounds of 76 and 77 and finished in a tie for 24th place at 224. Preston
Marshall tied for 28th place after shooting 76-75-75--226,
while Wes
Korth finished with a 73 to place 31st at 227.
