JACKSON, Tenn. -- A veteran Golden Eagle lineup maintained its
position Tuesday in the final round of the 54-hole Grover Page
Classic, claiming a solid fourth-place finish among the 16 teams in
the field at the Jackson Country Club.
Josh Simer, who carded a 69 in Monday's second round, followed
with an even-par 72 Tuesday to narrowly miss earning all-tournament
honors with a sixth place showing. He finished the event at 219 to
pace coach Craig King's team.
Jake Heatherly tied for 10th place (224) and Wes Korth (shown in
photo) tied for 19th place (227) as the Golden Eagles had three Top
20 finishers. Two strokes back, Blake Garrison (229) tied for 25th
place, and Preston Marshall rounded out the lineup in 60th place
(243). Marshall battled back from an opening round 86 to shoot
rounds of 78 and 79.
Central Arkansas crusied to the team title by 30 strokes, putting
together rounds of 277, 279 and 291 for an 847 total. North Alabama
(877) was second and Tennessee State (891) was third. Tech finished
at 899 for fourth place, with Union University in the fifth spot,
18 shots back at 917.
The second five included Southern Illinois (920), Cincinnati
(921), Morehead State (928), UT Martin (932) and Lambuth (932). In
all, the field included 16 teams and 88 golfers.
Tech had one additional player in the field, with Lee Maxwell
competing as an individual. He shot 240 to finish in a tie for 53rd
place.
Gideon Pienaar of Central Arkansas won medalist honors with
68-69-72--209, edging teammate Josh Sims by one shot.
The next action for the Golden Eagles comes March 22-23 at
Jacksonville State's Grub Mart Invitational in Gadsden, Ala.
