Cross country teams sixth at Vanderbilt as four runners set personal marks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Four runners posted personal best times Saturday as the Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams each finished sixth in their races at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Senior Stephanie Place produced the top highlight of the meet for Tech, claiming second in the women's event.

Place was edged at the finish line by Vanderbilt's Rita Jorgensen for individual honors, but still managed the fifth-best 5K time in Tech history with an 18:03.31 performance. She was less than six seconds behind the winner.

Senior Keri Light also ran well, finishing in 12th place overall in 19:09.78 for the 20th fastest Tech women's time.

Tiffany Palmer placed 36th in 20:03.85, followed by Ashley Evans (43rd) in 20:35.54, and freshman Traci Jones (48th) in 20:44.89. It was a personal-best for Jones. Also in the field for Tech, Amanda Simmons finished 60th in th time of 21:52.92.

Vanderbilt won the team title with 31 points, with Tech in sixth place after logginf 122 points.

In the men's 8L race, three runners clocked their PRs as Tech finished with 161 points. Vanderbilt also won the men's event, posting 42 points.

Sam Taylor had Tech's top finish, crossing the line in 29th place in 27:43.32. Just behind him, Ben Thompson finished 33rd in 27:51.23.

Peter Woerner was 35th with one of Tech's personal-best efforts, covering the distance in 28:04.14 and leading a group of three Golden Eagle runners who cross the line second apart. Joseph DeLorenzo was 36th in 28:04.34, and Ben Shassere was 37th in 28:11.39. Jarrad Read took 44th place in 28:25.37.

Freshmen Ethan McGroom and Brian Kennedy were next, each clocking their best times as Golden Eagles. McGroom was 53rd in 28:51.75, while Kennedy placed 63rd in 29:47.55. William Enicks completed Tech's lineup, finishing 68th in 30:37.19.
