Golden Eagles downed by unbeaten Morehead State in Monday rematch

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was just one of those kind of nights for the Tennessee Tech volleyball team Monday evening, as the Golden Eagles (4-6, 4-6) fell to undefeated Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State (10-0, 10-0) in the Hooper Eblen Center, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-15).

One night after coming as close to victory as any team has this season against the visiting Eagles, the purple and gold got a glimpse of how hot its opponent really is with six matches to play in the year. Morehead came out firing in the first set, compiling 17 kills on a 55.6 attack percentage for a 25-16 win.

In set two, the Eagles started hot again, taking a seven-point lead at 10-3. Tech fought back, squeezing the deficit down to two on a number of occasions. Morehead eventually pulled away late to take the set 25-20.

The visitors erupted to kick off the third set, taking a 9-0 lead out of the gate. The Golden Eagles answered, trimming the deficit to five at 15-10. Another run by Morehead State proved too much to overcome, as the Eagles stayed undefeated on the year behind a 25-15 set win.

Madeline Furtado led the Tech offensive effort on the day, hitting .353 with a team-high nine kills. Taylor Dorsey tallied six kills and a block while Skylar Boom turned in five kills and three total blocks.

Defensively, rookie libero McKenna Young registered a team-high 11 digs in the match. Setter Ashley Hand wrapped up the night with 26 assists, eight digs and three total blocks. Senior Ali Verzani totaled five kills, three services aces and five digs.

The Golden Eagles hit the road for two straight weeks, beginning with a pair of matches at in-state foe Tennessee State. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, Mar. 14 and for 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 15. Tech then makes a visit to Murray State Sunday, Mar. 21 through Monday, Mar. 22, with match times slated for 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
