COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After ending her Cookeville career in grand fashion over the weekend, senior catcher Chelsea Burgess was named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week.
The Dunlap, Tenn. native was given the honor Monday afternoon after hitting .625 (5-8) with two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored in leading the Tennessee Tech softball team to a three-game sweep over Morehead State to close out the regular season at home over the weekend.
Burgess enjoyed a day for the ages in Sunday's regular season finale at Tech Softball Field, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two round trippers and five RBI in the Golden Eagles' 14-7 victory for Tech's 11th win in the last 13 games. The 5-foot-5 catcher ends the regular season with a .248 batting average, six home runs, which put her in a tie with fellow senior Kendall Hooper and junior Angi Sakamoto for the team lead, and 23 RBI.
Burgess and the rest of the Golden Eagles enter the OVC Postseason Tournament hosted by Jacksonville State, May 7-10, as the No. 7 seed, locking up with No. 2 SIUE at 12:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday. With a win Tech would play the winner of No. 3 Eastern Illinois and No. 6 UT Martin on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT, while a loss would send the Golden Eagles to a 10 a.m. start against the EIU-UTM loser on Thursday in the double-elimination format.
