MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team finished off the third and final round of its first tournament of the spring Tuesday afternoon, placing fifth overall at the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Golden Eagles wrapped up the second day of competition at The Surf Golf and Beach Club with a 292 in its final go around the course, completing play with a 6-under 858. The team finished fifth among the 15 teams in competition, just one shot back of UT Arlington for fourth place.
UNCW and Jacksonville State tied for first place following the regulation number of holes, each combining as a team to post scores of 842 (22-under). After a sudden-death playoff, it was UNCW that captured the tournament title with the Gamecocks finishing as runner-up and host Appalachian State coming in third.
Tech junior Bracton Womack concluded play in the top spot among the Golden Eagles on the leaderboard, tying for 16th in the field of 105 golfers. He fired a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 214 total for the week.
Freshman Nick Sutton and sophomore Chance Taylor followed right behind Womack, tying for 24th place with scores of 216. Sutton carded a 2-over 74 on the day to finalize the best 54-hole score of the season. Taylor posted a 3-over 75 to conclude his second-lowest showing in a 54-hole event in his young career, just one stroke behind his 215 at the EKU Intercollegiate in September.
Next among the Golden Eagles in competition, sophomore Bryce Beeler ended his tournament with a 1-over 73 to tie for 29th overall. He captured a season-low 217 to finish his first event of the spring. Turning in the top score of the day for the purple and gold was junior Will Brooks, who carded an even-par 72. Matching his first-round effort, jumped up the leaderboard to tie for 38th and turn in a 219.
Tech will now set its focus on its own event, the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, which will begin Sunday, Mar. 15. The three-day event will once again be hosted at Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn. and be contested on the River Course.
