Golden Eagle student-athletes produce 28th straight semester with 3.0 or better GPA

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech's student-athletes delivered yet another highly successful performance in the classroom during the Fall 2022 semester, producing Golden Eagle Athletics' sixth-straight semester with a collective GPA of at least 3.20.

During the fall, Tech's 15 teams came together for a mark of 3.330, the third-highest recorded department-wide GPA. It also represented the 28th straight semester that Tech Athletics' cumulative GPA exceeded the 3.0 plateau, a legacy that began in Spring 2009.

"Our student-athletes continue to impress me with their work ethic in the classroom and, as is becoming a longstanding tradition here, it has translated to success with yet another spectacular cumulative GPA for the department," Tech Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Welfare Dr. Leveda Birdwell expressed. "We place very high expectations for our student-athletes to achieve at a high standard, and I'm elated to see them succeeding not just on their respective playing fields and courts, but in the classroom as well."

For the second semester in a row, an incredible 13 Golden Eagle teams delivered GPA's above the 3.0 mark, with seven programs seeing improvement from their Spring 2022 grades. 

"It takes a lot of people throughout the University to help our student-athletes achieve such high marks," Wilson said. "From our faculty who spend countless hours in the classroom to the efforts of Dr. Leveda Birdwell and her staff who keep an eye on their success and work so closely with them to keep them on track, it means so much to me, to our department and to our University to see these young men and women excel in so many ways."

The Golden Eagle soccer team proved to be champions on more than just the pitch, delivering the top GPA in the department with a mark of 3.634 while extending its streak of exceeding a 3.0 GPA to 38 straight semesters. Finishing second was the women's basketball team with a GPA of 3.588, their third-highest recorded mark.

Volleyball continued its incredible streak of boasting a team GPA over 3.0, securing its 45th consecutive semester above the mark with a 3.486 to rank third overall. Also keeping impressive streaks alive were soccer (38 straight), softball (37 straight), and both indoor and outdoor track and field (37 straight). The tennis team turned in a 3.475 GPA to make it 29 consecutive semesters above 3.0 while the women's cross country team reached its 21-straight semester and the women's golf team achieved its 19th semester in a row.
