Tech tied for fifth after rain-shortened first day at Bearcat Invitational

HEBRON, Ky. – Rain and brutal weather conditions played a significant factor on the first day of action of the Bearcat Invitational Monday, but the Tennessee Tech men's golf team didn't let that hold them back from getting out to a quick start in the team's first event in a month.

Three Golden Eagles finished with identical scores in the first round, each tying for 17th overall after carding a round of 75. Included in the leading bunch for the Tech squad were senior Mason Griffin and juniors Mitch Thomas and Bryce Kendrick.

Also contributing to the team's overall 301 showing on the first day was senior Lee Whitehead. The wiley veteran finished just one stroke back of his teammates, tallying a first-round 76 to tie for 30th in the field of 80.

A delay of over three hours forced an early end to the second round of play, leading to a busy schedule for Tuesday. An attempt to finish out the second round of 18 holes will be made before deciding whether to begin round three.

"I thought our guys really played well out there despite some rough conditions," head coach Polk Brown said. "We're hoping to be able to get the full 54 holes in tomorrow and I think we are in great position to make a move and fight for a championship."
