Football staff adds state champion Adam Swayze to 2016 signing class

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech football signing class of 2016 just grew by one, with the addition of Adam Swayze, a wide receiver/strong safety who helped his Independence High School team record a perfect 15-0 record on the way to capturing the TSSAA Class 5A state championship in Tucker Stadium in December.

A versatile, 6-foot-3, 190-pound athlete from Thompson’s Station, Tenn., Swayze will be listed as 'athlete" on the roster while the Golden Eagle staff looks to establish his role.

The Eagles rolled to a 49-14 win over Sevier County in the TSSAA title game in December on the same field Swayze will now call his home turf. In that game, he helped the cause with a second-half interception that he returned 15 yards.

As a senior, he played in all 14 games and stepped into the role of quarterback for several games when the team’s starting signal-caller was sidelined with an injury. For the year, Swayze caught 22 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed 40 times for 227 yards and four TDs, and was 45-for-82 passing for 783 yards and eight touchdowns and only three interceptions.

He led Independence to a 35-14 win over Lincoln County in his first game at quarterback, passing for 220 yards and rushing for 116 yards.

Independence was ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 31 nationally.

In 37 career games, Swayze had 41 catches for 672 yards and five touchdowns, and finished with 974 all-purpose yards, along with 92 career tackles from his strong safety position.

Swayze joins a class that now numbers 21 signees for first-year coach Marcus Satterfield’s staff.
