Mayhew sets school record, Golden Eagles earn nine finishes in the Top 5 at TSU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Ashley Mayhew set a school record in the hammer throw and the Tennessee Tech women’s track & field team recorded nine Top 5 finishes at the 7th annual Boston Moon Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday at Tennessee State’s Ed Temple Track.

In addition to the nine Top 5 spots, Golden Eagles also claimed seven more Top 10 finishes at the meet. Tech had two second-place efforts, three thirds, three fourths and a fifth-place performance.

Mayhew’s toss of 139 feet, 10 inches in the hammer throw eclipsed the school record of 131 feet, 7.75 inches which she had set earlier this spring. In addition to that second place finish, senior Katherine Lynn also claimed a second place showing, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump.

Along with her second in the hammer, Mayhew earned fourth place in the shot put (40 feet, 3.25 inches) and seventh in the discus (112 feet, 4 inches).

Senior Keri Light had two of Tech’s three third place finishes, including a 2:18.38 clocking in the 800-meter run which missed her own school record by just one second. She was also third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:30.59. Besides her near-miss at 800 meters, Light also challenged the school record in the 1,500-meter run, finishing sixth with a time of 4:42.18, just two seconds off the school record pace.

Tech’s other third place finish came in the 4x100 relay, where the Golden Eagles posted a time of 51.39 seconds.

Tech’s fourth place finishes came in the shot put, javelin and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Rebecca Forbes was fourth in the javelin with a toss of 101 feet, 6 inches. In the steeplechase, senior Ashley Evans was fourth in 12:53.63.

Tech’s fifth place effort came from freshman Emily Weinzetl with a time of 1:01.24 in the 400-meter run.

Besides the seventh by Mayhew in the discus, sophomore Leayn Carter earned a pair of seventh-place finishes in the long and triple jumps. She went 16 feet, 6.5 inches in the long jump, and cleared 33 feet, one-half inch in the triple jump.
