Sambu in Top 10, Golden Eagles battle No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Geoffrey Sambu earned a Top 10 finish individually and the Tennessee Tech men's cross country team used Saturday's run against the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers as a solid learning experience on a challenging, slippery course. The Hoosiers claimed seven of the first eight spots on the way to a perfect score of 15 to win the event.

Sambu, a transfer who is in his first season on the Tech roster, ran with the leaders until the final mile and eventually stayed close to the front with a ninth place showing, covering the 8K circuit in 26:09.9. Sophomore Brennan Huber kept the leaders in sight and finished in 17th place with a career-best time of 26:53.6.

Tech's lineup also included Daniel Williamson (27:54.0), Jordan Roth (27:54.4), Sterling Smith (28:25.0), Ian Barclay (28:43.6), Wesley King (29:00.8), and Sam Lariviere (29:27.8).

"We did about what I expected we would do," said first-year coach Wayne Angel. "I'm very please with what I saw. The most important thing was the lessons we learned and how we are continuing to grow. We are learning how to compete, and we are improving. I was really pleased with how we worked to compete, whether we were in the front or near the back. Everybody is growing."

The Golden Eagles will be in Nashville next week for Saturday's Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt.
