BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech catcher Mack Whitcomb was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Whitcomb was the driving force behind Tech's offense during the team's 4-game sweep of Le Moyne over the weekend, batting .385 with all five hits of the extra-base variety. He scored five times and plated six runs during a frigid and wet weekend in Cookeville.
The sophomore opened the season with a go-ahead three-run home run that represented the game-winning RBI and scored the team's game-winning run in game two. In the fourth and final game, Whitcomb went deep again, hammering an oppo taco into a 15-mile-per-hour headwind.
The Mokena, Ill. native wrapped up the first weekend of play with an eye-popping OPS of 1.625 while slugging 1.154. Behind the plate, Whitcomb controlled the Dolphins' running game, throwing out three potential base stealers in three games at catcher.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday afternoon, playing host to in-state rival Belmont in a 3:00 p.m. CT match-up at the Quill. Admission to all Tech home baseball games is free of charge.
