Tech scores in ninth to force extra innings, tops Belmont in 12th

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Trailing 4-3 in the ninth inning, senior Cory Wright hit an RBI double to tie the game, and pitcher Lee Henry struck out two in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. Then, in the 12th inning, Chad Oberacker tripled and later scored the game-winning run as Tech defeated Belmont, 5-4 in Nashville Tuesday evening.

Henry (3-1) earned the win for Tech, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out six batters. Ryan Dennick pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in relief to help the Tech cause before Henry came in to close the game.

Tennessee Tech scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second inning which was highlighted by a single to left field by Ben Burgess to score Oberaker. The Golden Eagles scored an additional run in the top of the third inning to take the 3-0 lead, before Belmont responded with Elkins' solo home run to right field in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-1.

The Bruins eventually took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs for a 4-3 lead. The first run of the inning was scored by Matt Zeblo on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly to center field by Dylan Craig scored Matt Hamann and tied the score at 3-3. The last run was driven in on a single by Elkins to drive in Jon Ivie.

A few different Golden Eagles had a great night from the plate, as Evan Webb went 3-for-4, Cory Wright went 2-for-4 and Ben Burgess went 4-for-6.

Tech completed the sweep of the two-game season series with Belmont, as the Golden Eagles topped the Bruins 8-6 in Cookeville earlier this month.

Tech will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Middle Tennessee State in Bush Stadium. The Blue Raiders topped Tech, 9-8, in Murfreesboro earlier in the season. First pitch Wednesday is at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
