Golden Eagles look for steady improvement against huge field at Furman Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A huge and challenging field will greet the Tennessee Tech cross country teams Saturday when they run at the third annual Furman Cross Country Classic. The meet will feature teams from several major conference, including the SEC and ACC.

Tech's runners will compete in a field that features 35 men's teams and 40 women's teams. The morning will also include high school races, with 30 boy's teams and 20 girl's squads.

In short, spectators better look both ways when crossing the course to avoid being run over.

"We're very excited about competing at Furman," said Tech coach Wayne Angel. "It will be a highly competitive meet. The course at Furman isn't as difficult as Indiana, but the teams we run against will be outstanding.

"Our goal is to continue to improve each meet and build on the momentum that we have established," Angel said.

The collegiate women's 6K event will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by the collegiate men's 8K race at 9:15 a.m.  An awards presentation will begin at 1 p.m.

The races will be held on the cross country course of the Furman Golf Club, which has hosted two NCAA Division I Cross Country championships.

Tech opened the 2015 schedule last week against Indiana University in the Indiana Open. Freshman Jenna Storms and junior Sarah Brandt were the top performers on the Golden Eagle women's squad, while juniors Daniel Williamson and Geoffrey Sambu paced the Tech men's squad.

As it was the initial meet of the year, the Indiana event was also the first collegiate meet for several Tech runners. Golden Eagles Amos Kipchirchir, Timothy Misoy and Joshua Daughtry each established career-best times at the 8K distance.

For the women's race, not a single current member of the Tech roster has competed for Tech at the 6K distance so every time will establish a career-best.
