Golden Eagles fall in extras to SIU Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Golden Eagles road struggles continued as they dropped the third act of their series to SIU Edwardsville 6-5 in eight innings.

Tech played catch up throughout the game, as the Cougars built three separate leads, only to see the Golden Eagles battle back each time to knot up the score.

SIUE notched two unearned runs against Tech starter Claudia Harke in the first inning, only to have Tech answer right back in the top of the third with a two-run home run off the bat of Chanelle Spalding.

Having given up another pair of runs in the bottom of the third, the Tech offense responded with another two-run homer in the top of the fifth, this time off the bat of Callie Schmidt to tie the score up at four.

SIUE took the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Golden Eagles put together a seventh-inning rally as they scored the tying run on a wild pitch from Lindsey Coleman, to force extra innings.

An RBI single by SIUE's Whitney Davis in the bottom of the eighth ended the game 6-5, in favor of the Cougars.

Coleman improved to 5-1 on the season, in two innings of work, while Holly Thomas took the loss, falling to 10-7 in 5.1 innings pitched.

The Golden Eagles (15-18, 6-11 OVC) continue their road trip Wednesday, as they take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, at 1 p.m.
