Late offense vaults Golden Eagles past Redhawks

Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Chanelle Spalding's first home run of the season proved to be the deciding factor as Tech avoided the sweep against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.

After dropping the first two games against SEMO Saturday, the Golden Eagles were able to respond in the final chapter of their three-game series with some late inning heroics.

The Tech offense remained dormant through the first four innings as SEMO's Shea Cothren nursed a 1-0 Redhawk lead, while allowing just four TTU base runners.

With two outs in the fifth, the Golden Eagles staged a two-run rally as sophomore Chanelle Spalding corked a two-run dinger over the center field fence to put Tech up 2-1.

Sophomore Melody Christian kept the runs coming in the top of the sixth as she hit a two-run single, with two outs, to increase Tech's lead to 4-1.

Junior Holly Thomas, who absorbed the 4-1 loss to SEMO Saturday, regained her form as she went the distance, giving up just one run, while striking out six, to improve to 8-4 on the season.

Cothren took the loss for the Redhawks as she went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs and five walks.

Tech (12-10, 3-3 OVC) returns home Tuesday, for a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
