Tech downs Toledo, Northwestern State in day two of Frost Classic

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech softball team appears to have found its groove as it dropped the Toledo Rockets and the Northwestern State Lady Demons. The pair of wins brings the Golden Eagle record to 4-7, including a 3-1 mark in the Frost Classic.

The day began with another dominant performance from junior pitcher Holly Thomas, who earned a five-inning victory as Tech brought down the Rockets 9-1. Thomas, fresh off her second career no-hitter, kept the Rockets on the launch pad as she gave up four hits and one run, while striking out four, for her third victory of the season. Her complete game against Toledo is also her fourth complete game of the season in six starts.

With a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the Golden Eagle bats finished the job as Tech scored five runs in the inning to take the 9-1, five-inning victory.

Senior Lacie Coquerille drove in a team-high three runs, while sophomore Melody Christian croosed the plate three times. In 23 at bats, the Golden Eagles posted a total of nine hits and one walk, with nobody striking out.

Tech finished off the day with 2-0 victory over Northwestern State. In their previous meeting this season, the Lady Demons defeated TTU 2-1.

As in their last meeting, pitching was the decisive factor, but this time it was junior Whitney Cummings who reaped the rewards as she kept the Lady Demons at bay as she went the distance to pick up her first victory of the season. In her win, Cummings gave up only three hits, while striking out four.

Northwestern State's Brooke Boeing kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard through the first four innings, but in the fifth Tech put together a two-out rally, in which it scored two runs off a pair of hits from Christian and sophomore Chanelle Spalding, to take a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagle defense came up big in the final two innings, turing a pair of double plays to secure the win.

Tennessee Tech (4-7) wraps up the Frost Classic Sunday against East Tennessee State. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
