Litherland sets career-high in air rifle competition but Tech falls to UT Martin

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Austin Litherland set a new career-high in the air rifle competition, shooting a 581 out of 600 on Sunday as the Tennessee Tech rifle team hosted UT Martin on Sunday.

UT Martin won the overall competition with a 4,505 score from their mixed team, and a 4,469 score from their women's team. Tech finished with a score of 4,431.

"UT Martin has done a great job recruiting for the future and will be a tough team to beat in the OVC," Tennessee Tech head coach Steve Law said. "We didn't do well, period. Austin Litherland had a career high Air score of 581 out of 600. Unfortunately the team as a whole didn't not shoot to expectation. We have consistency problems from week to week. We are working to try and fix that."

Litherland also posted the second-highest overall score in the smallbore competition, with a 562. Patrick Stidham shot 537, Curtis Gagne shot 551 and Jonathan Zimmerer shot 535 in that competition.

In the air rifle competition Zimmerer and Jessica McCauley each shot 560, and Gagne shot 544.

The Golden Eagles will compete again on Oct. 16 against Columbus State. Tech will have two more home competitions, beginning with Jacksonville State on Oct. 17, followed by Morehead State on Oct. 25.
