Golden Eagles bid for first win Sunday at Appalachian State

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Two tennis teams searching for some early season success will tangle Sunday at 11 a.m. CT when Tennessee Tech visits Appalachian State for a non-conference match.

The Golden Eagles head to Boone, N.C., with an 0-6 overall record in the midst of a very demanding two-month schedule to kick off the season. Two of Tech’s opponents were ranked opponents. Appalachian State, meanwhile, heads into the weekend with an 0-3 record. The Mountaineers will have one chance to break into the win column before Tech visits, as Appalachian State hosts East Tennessee Saturday.

Tech and Appalachian State have faced off only twice prior to this matchup, with both teams earning a victory. The first took place in February of ’87, when the Mountaineers defeated the Golden Eagles, 8-1. It was another 22 years until they competed against each other, meeting again in 2009, and Tech won, 4-3. This will be the first time that TTU will travel to Boone.

Senior Syrym Abdukhalikov has posted a 4-0 record this spring in singles play to lead the Golden Eagles, defeating nationally ranked Victor Valente from Georgia State among his victims. Sophomore Alejandro Augusto is 2-2 this spring with two unfinished matches.
