Smith was a member of Tech's four OVC Champion football teams from 1958-1961. His outstanding play in 1960 and 1961 resulted in his being named to the OVC's All-Decade First Team after 1969. His play also earned him the OVC Outstanding Linebacker Award. He won the Robert Hill Johnson Award and was team captain for the 1961 season.
